Inspiration

Two-time Olympic Short-Track Speedskater and many-time U.S. National Champion Maame Biney got her short-track start at Fort Dupont Ice Arena in the rink's Learn to Speedskate program, which was sparked into existence in 2002 by Coach Nat and inspired by future Olympic Champion Shani Davis.

Maame made her competitive debut at age 7 in  the DC Open Meet, which has introduced many of the region's - nation's - top young skaters to Olympic-style short-track speed skating competition.

Olympian in Life

Born in Ghana and raised in Northern Virginia by her father Kweku, Maame now lives, studies, and trains full-time in Salt Lake City, Utah.  She continues to inspire DC-ICE and FDIA skaters, including as an awards presenter at the DC Open Meet and ICE-a-thon.  Like Shani Davis before her, Maame's humble participation serves as a bright example of Olympism for youth everywhere.

Legacy

Already a pioneering National Champion and Olympian , Maame aspires to be among the world's best short track speed skaters. She is training hard to return to a third Olympic Winter Games in 2026.
